Western marks second undefeated season for women's lacrosse

Saturday, October 20 marked the second undefeated season for the Western Mustangs women’s lacrosse team, who finished in a decisive first place. Expectations are high for upcoming OUA finals in Kingston, where the Mustangs will face off Saturday, October 27th in their quest for Gold.

Western finished the season with two games, the first against York. There were eight goal scorers throughout the first game, including freshman Michaela Naumovski (3G, 0A) with an impressive performance, scoring a hat trick. Despite Western’s gentle lead, York fought hard during the first half, taking advantage of Western’s mistakes, keeping the score a close 4-3. The second half saw a different team from the Mustangs. Re-energized, Western went on a 4 goal run, finishing the game 12-7.

Freshman goalie Caroline Hendrick was named player of the game.

Coach Dave Hastings commented on Western’s play emphasizing that “it was nice to get the win, but the team struggled with finishing some fundamentals” assuring that “it will be corrected before next game.”

Mustangs went on to prove Hastings right, sharpening their game during the match against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Western scored nine strong goals before UOIT was able to respond, finishing the half 9-1 in Western’s favour. The Mustangs controlled the second half handily, finishing 13-2. The victory was an exemplary display of teamwork, with 12 players contributing goals.

Alyssa Childs had an impressive five point game (3G, 2A), while defenders Christina Burns, Kristen Stafford and Alexa McAllister all managed to hit the net. Midfielder Maddy Crowther was named Western’s player of the game.

Coaches were pleased with Western’s transformation. “The team really cleaned up their play and moved the ball great in transition. Once mistakes were corrected the team showed how capable they are. We were extremely pleased how the team responded after the first game. Congratulations to all on another great regular season.”

The Mustangs are on the road for the OUA finals in Kingston on Saturday, October 27 where they will try for the gold medal.
