The Mustangs men’s hockey team is set for a long road trip to Thunder Bay this weekend to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in back-to-back games. Lakehead currently leads the OUA with four wins, and the Mustangs look to break an even 2-2 record and compete with the best in the league.
Last season, the Windsor Lancers ousted the Thunderwolves from playoff play, and the home team is hungry for revenge this season. Western has won the last two meetings against Lakehead, 7-4 and 4-0 in regular season games and the Mustangs hope to continue this streak and snap Lakehead’s 4-1-1 record in the process.
Mustang Zach Harnden continues to lead the team in scoring with five goals in four games and sits second in the OUA rankings. Fourth-year forward Steve Reese and rookie defenceman Daniel Erlich teamed up to rework the team’s chemistry and earned two assists each last game against Windsor. Goaltenders Josh Unice and John Cullen have both stood between the posts this season, making one of the best one-two goalie combos in the league combining for a CIS top 10 save percentage of .908.
Lakehead has the league’s top four scorers so far, including Luke Judson who had eight-points in three games to start the season, in total he’s recorded 10 points and only failed to record a point in one of the team’s six games. Teammate Thomas Frazee is tied for the OUA lead with five goals and joins Judson, Matt Caria, and Mike Hammond in leading the team with 10 points on the year. The Thunderwolves are on a roll and the Mustangs expect no less than fierce competition heading north on Friday.
Weekend action is underway at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and game two of the weekend doubleheader is Saturday at 7:30 p.m., both at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay. SSN Canada is streaming the games live on their website.
