Weekend Preview: Western vs. York and UOIT

The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team enters a double header this weekend, taking on the York Lions on Saturday night and UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon. Western hopes to snap a two game losing streak that set the team back to sixth in the OUA standings. York and UOIT closely trail the Mustangs in the rankings and look to attain .500 records with wins on the road.

So far, the Mustangs have a 3-1-1 record, coming off a tough overtime loss to Toronto Varsity Blues last weekend. Rookie Cassidy Gosling – who had an impressive start with three goals in two games – hopes to regain momentum as the team has home ice advantage this weekend

Mustang Stacey Scott sits on the OUA Top 20 leader board in points, and Mustang goalie Kelly Campbell already has 301:02 minutes in net with a .959 save percentage, she aims to retain a top-OUA ranking after these two matchups. Eyes will also be on third-year forward Ally Galloway who has already racked up three goals this season.

The last meeting between Western and York was in February during the OUA playoffs, where the Mustangs took the series in three games – capping things off with a 3-0 win on the road. Scott earned two points with a goal and assist that game, and the ‘Stangs look to repeat that success on Saturday evening.

The UOIT Ridgebacks last traveled to Thompson Arena in January in a contest the Mustangs took 6-4. The Ridgebacks are looking for redemption this time after just missing the postseason last year. Both the UOIT goalie Cassie Charette and top forward Nicole LoPresti are rookies and look to set the stage against the Mustang rivals on Sunday afternoon.

Game times are set for 7:00 p.m. vs. York on Saturday, followed by a 4:00 p.m. puck drop on Sunday vs. UOIT, both at Thompson Arena. Mustangs TV will be streaming the action live on SSN Canada for both contests.
