Box Score TORONTO - The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball dominated the court again tonight taking the Ryerson Rams in only three sets to close out their season opening weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.
Set scores were 28-26, 25-14, 25-20.
The first set went down to the wire but the Mustangs edged out the Rams defeating them 28-26 with Phil James picking up the winning point on a block.
Coming off of a close win, the Mustangs came back on the court in the second set determined to leave with a win and took the Rams 25-14. Garret May was dominant in the second frame, picking up nine kills in the set.
Ryerson would jump out to an early lead in the third set, holding an 8-3 advantage before the Mustangs would go on a 14-5 run to take the lead midway through the set. The Rams continued to battle, tying things up at 17, before Western took control and finished out the set with a 25-20 victory.
Garrett May led the Mustangs with 17 kills on 37 attempts earning a game high of 18 points in only three sets along with Phil James who had six kills on ten attempts while only committing two errors. On the defensive front Luke Sim recorded four of Western’s eight blocks in the contest.
After a successful opening weekend the Mustangs return to London for their home opener on Friday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. against Waterloo. Western follows that up with a game against Guelph on Saturday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m.
