The Western women’s ice hockey team will face off against the Laurier Golden Hawks this Saturday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m., and Waterloo on Sunday, October 7 at 4:00 p.m. on home ice to start off the 2012-2013 season.
Western comes into the regular season fresh off a 5-1 victory over Team China last Friday. It was the second consecutive victory for the Mustangs over China as last year Western won by a final score of 5-2. This year’s contest left the Mustangs fired up and ready for a great season.
First year forward Cassidy Gosling came out with a bang last week, scoring the first goal in the game against Team China. Western ices a young team this season with 16 of the 21 players being in either first or second year, however the Mustangs are coming together nicely and have gotten off to a great start.
The Mustangs open up the 2012 regular season facing off against the same Laurier Golden Hawks that defeated Western in last year’s OUA Final in two straight games. Forward Stacey Scott played outstanding during the series and appears to already be back in top form for her second year, scoring Western’s final goal against China.
Last season the Mustangs were unable to defeat the top-ranked Golden Hawks, losing the season series 5-0. This year’s Western squad looks to build on the run to the OUA Finals last season and topple one of their biggest rivals.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Thompson Arena.
