The CIS number ten ranked Western Mustangs women’s hockey team begin the first half of their home and away weekend schedule at the friendly confines of Thompson Arena where they face 401 rivals the Windsor Lancers. Western looks to build on their two game unbeaten streak and snap the three game win streak the Lancers are on. Windsor currently sits fourth in the OUA while the Mustangs are just behind in fifth place. A win would put Western right back near the top of the OUA standings building on an impressive 5-1-1 start to the 2012 campaign.
Windsor has gotten off to a fast start this October with six wins and have been able to put the puck in the back of the next scoring 31 goals in only eight contests. Western’s strength has been on the defensive end and behind the strong goaltending of Kelly Campbell the Mustangs have only yielded nine goals in seven games, the fewest in the OUA.
The Lancers are led offensively by a trio of scorers. Canadace Chevilier is near the top of the OUA with six goals and 13 points, Bree Polici along with Jillian Rops have four goals and nine points to lead the charges. The Bulk of the Mustangs scoring has come from Stacey Scott, Kendra Deller, and Cassidy Gosling. This game will be a battle of a great offence versus a great defence and should be an exciting matchup.
Western already looks in midseason form as they aim to make another step in the OUA in their attempts to knock off perennial champion the Laurier Golden Hawks on their pursuit to be crowned CIS champion of women’s ice hockey.
Game time for this primetime matchup is set for 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
