LONDON, Ont.- The Western Mustangs defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-0 Saturday night at home, extending their win streak to five games. Goaltender Josh Unice was exceptional in net, stopping all 30 shots that he faced.
“We’re paying attention in our defensive zone and it’s starting to pay dividends”, said Western head coach Patrick Powers when asked about what the team is doing so well lately. “We’re getting the puck deep and banging away at everything”.
Each team had their share of scoring chances in the first period, however solid goaltending at both ends of the ice was evident and the game remained scoreless. Western held an 11-8 edge in shots for the period.
Zach Harnden got the Mustangs going at 5:10 of the second period with a short-handed tally. Harnden took a nice feed from teammate Steve Reese and beat Gee-Gees Russell Abbott five-hole on a breakaway to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Western’s David Corrente laid a bone-crushing hit on Ottawa’s Kevin Morrison midway through the second and both teams began to pick up the physical play.
Abbott made two tremendous saves in the period, robbing both Reese and Julian Cimadamore to keep the Mustangs to a minimal lead.
Kyle Decoste gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead at 4:16 of the third after banging in a rebound from a point shot by Corrente.
Matt Clarke scored his sixth goal of the season after beating Abbott high glove-side on a breakaway at 13:47, increasing the lead to 3-0.
Reese took a hard hit from Ottawa’s Vincent Baulne-Charland with only a few minutes left in the game and needed to be helped off the ice. Baulne-Charland was assessed a two-minute penalty for boarding.
Matt Marantz put the icing on the cake for Western after beating Abbott on a beautiful shot at 17:34 on the powerplay. Adam McKee made a great cross-ice pass to Marantz who went high glove-side and made no mistake, putting the game out of reach for the Gee-Gees.
The Mustangs outshot the Gee-Gees 38-30 and improved to 6-3-0 on the season. Western travels to Laurier this Thursday, November 15 to face the Goldenhawks (4-5-1) before returning home Saturday, November 17 to play the Brock Badgers (4-5-1). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Thompson Arena. For tickets go to http://westernmustangstickets.universitytickets.com/user_pages/category.asp?id=94.
