Box Score The Western Mustangs women's hockey team had a great feel for the ice at Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines this afternoon, leaving the arena with a 6-1 win against the home team Brock Badgers. Western rookie Kryshandra Green proved she fits right into the OUA competitive varsity league with a goal and four assists during the game. Despite being outshot 26-42 by the Badgers, the Mustangs capitalized on the chances the team received for the one-sided scoring game.
Third-year veteran Kaitlyn Gosling also had an impressive showing on defense, netting a goal partway into the first period and providing three assists for the team's second and third period goals.
The game was penalty filled as third-year Tara Cation went to the bench five times out the Mustangs' nine overall penalties. Brock sent five players to the bench for roughing and tripping -- three calls of which were in the first period. The Mustangs spent over one period's worth of the match up shorthanded.
Coming off a marginal loss on Saturday to Guelph, Mustang
Stacey Scott opened the score for Western less than five minutes into the first period. From Green, Scott reached the back of the net beating Brock goaltender Camille Carrier, and went on to score again in the third period for a two-goal game. Scott now sits 15th on the OUA scorers chart, behind Green with 12 points in 11 games played.
Brock managed a shorthanded goal on Mustang goaltender
Kelly Campbell well into the first period. Badger forward Jessica Fickle snuck the puck behind the red line and got her name on the scoreboard. Western had a 3-1 lead after the first period and kept Fickle as the lone Brock scorer.
Western captain Casey Rosen and teammate Kendra Deller also scored for the Mustangs -- Deller on the Mustang power play and Rosen shorthanded while Cation was in the box.
Brock went 0/9 on powerplay opportunities and Campbell made 41 saves to sit fourth in the OUA rankings.
The win earns the Mustangs an 8-2-1 record for third place in the OUA, while Brock remains winless so far this season at 0-10-1.
