De Coste's OT winner propels Mustangs over Golden Hawks

De Coste scores against Laurier earlier this season at Thompson Arena

Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. – Kyle De Coste found the back of the net only one minute and 38 seconds into overtime giving the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team a 4-3 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night in Waterloo. The win was Western’s sixth straight, moving the Mustangs to 8-3 on the season and into a tie for first with Windsor and Lakehead.

Continuing what’s been a common theme so far this season, the Mustangs spread the scoring around with four different players slipping pucks behind Laurier’s Ryan Daniels. De Coste, Adam Stoykewych, and Brandon Greenside each had two points in the victory to lead the Mustangs in scoring. The Golden Hawks had three players of their own record two points with Greg Cerilli, Ryan Lopes, and Trent Hawke topping the Laurier side of the score sheet.

First-year netminder John Cullen stopped 20 shots to pick up the win for Western between the pipes, recording his first victory of the season. Daniels had a strong game for Laurier despite the loss, stopping 38 of the 42 shots he faced.

The Golden Hawks took the lead early, opening the scoring just over eight minutes into the game on a goal from Lopes. Greenside tied things up for the Mustangs late in the period before Hawke retook the lead for Laurier less than a minute later to give the Golden Hawks a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Western didn’t waste any time tying things up once play resumed as Harnden scored his team leading 11th goal of the season only 2:25 into the second period. Steve Gaskin put the Mustangs in front midway through the period, recording his second goal in three games off of assists from Stoykewych and Ryan Kirk.

After getting outshot 19-7 in the second period, Laurier would regain momentum in the third with Cerilli tying the game once again with just over six minutes to play, eventually sending the game to overtime.

The Mustangs controlled the extra frame, outshooting Laurier 3-0, including De Coste’s winner at 1:38, his fourth goal of the season.

Western returns to the ice this Saturday, hosting the Brock Badgers at Thompson Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and Mustangs TV will be streaming all of the action at the following link: http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/4469/
