Weekend Preview: Women's hockey team split between home and Windsor rinks

The Western Mustangs women's hockey looks to uphold last weekend's momentum against Brock Badgers for a home and away game this weekend.

UOIT Preview:
Friday, November 16th, 7:00pm – Thompson Arena

The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team begins the weekend off back at the friendly confines of Thompson Arena where the put their 8-2-1 record on the line versus the UOIT Ridgebacks. UOIT sit in the middle of the pack in the highly competitive OUA and look to build on a three game unbeaten streak. Western saw its winning streak snap with a 3-4 loss to Guelph  last weekend, but rebounded nicely the next game and decisively beat the winless Brock Badgers 6-1.

Jill Morrillo leads the Ridgebacks with seven goals in just 12 games. Morrillo, along with Sarah Worthington and Nicole LoPresti are a forward line that the Mustangs have to be weary of come Friday. In their own end of the ice Jessica Larabie and Cassie Charette have been splitting the goaltending duties and will need another strong performance against Western.

Western has found the back of the net with great proficiency the past few games. In the past two contests they have put the puck in the back of the net on nine occasions. The offensive firepower has been spread out the past few contests which includes a five point performance by Kryshandra Green. The Gosling sisters have been major contributors in this young season , assisting on many goals while playing solid in front of stalwart goalie Kelly Campbell. An entire team effort has contributed to the Mustangs’ 8-2-1 start on the 2012-13 campaign. The Mustangs look to edge closer to the top of the OUA come Friday night against the visiting team from Oshawa.

The game will be streamed on MustangsTV, live on westernmustangs.ca

Windsor  Preview
Sunday, November 18 , 4:10pm @ Windsor

The Lady Mustangs finish off the weekend a few hours down the 401 West in a battle of two teams near the top of the OUA standings. Western comes into weekend action with 17 points, only four back of first place Queen`s and Laurier in second. To proceed up the standings, the Stangs face an impressive Lancer squad who sit only one point behind them in the standings. The Lancers have put  52 pucks in the back of the net  in only twelve contests and are riding  an impressive 7-3 mark in the last ten contests.

Windsor is led by Alyssa Baldin who has an impressive 11 goals in only 12 games and sits among the leaders in the entire CIS. She is flanked by Candace Chevalier and Bree Polici who have been equally impressive contributing to the high powered attack. Goaltender Karyle Robinson has seen most of the minutes between the pipes and has an 8-4 record with one shutout, giving the Lancers someone reliable back there to count on.

Western plays under the guidance of head coach Chris Higgins and looks in midseason form, primed for a deep playoff run. With a goal differential of plus 18 in this young season, the team, grounded by back stop Kelly Campbell, looks to create some separation in the standings. Campbell has an astounding .947 save percentage and three shutouts, putting herself in an elite category of CIS goaltenders. Kendra Deller and Stacey Scott have been major factors in the Mustangs’ season success so far, combining for 20 points in just 11 games. Look for Western to try to get up on an explosive Lancer team early who is going into the game fired up looking to catch the Mustang rivals.

This contest will be held in Windsor on Sunday afternoon. It will be live streamed on SSN Canada’s website.
