May heads Mustangs to straight weekend victories

Box Score KINGSTON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team ended the weekend on a high note topping the Queen’s Gaels earlier this afternoon in four competitive sets, -- two of which hit the 30 mark -- defeating Queen’s 3-1. This was Western's second victory of the weekend putting the team's OUA regular season record at 5-1.

Set scores were 30-28, 31-29, 19-25, 25-22.

Heading the Mustangs was current OUA leader Garrett May with a team high of 21.5 points in four sets while gaining 20 kills on 45 attempts with nine digs. Following close behind was teammate Justin Scapinello contributing 14 kills on 33 attempts with 13 digs, earning 16.5 points for the game.

Setter Sean McKay was also a huge asset to Western’s win this afternoon showing 46 assists to help the Mustangs top the Gaels.

The first set was a nail biting match that kept both teams on their toes. The competitive point for point affair led the game to 30 points where the Mustangs took the first set leading by two points over the Gaels.

Not giving up their power, Western kept the competition tough edging the Gaels once again into a point for point affair coming out just on top of Queen’s 31-29, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead for the match.

The two-set-win-streak gave the Mustangs room to breathe, and the team let it show in the third set as they let the Gaels over power them by a solid six points. Queen’s took Western 19-25, changing the fate of the match.

The third set put the Mustangs on edge, and one win was all the team needed but the Gael's put up a strong fight. Purple and white pulled through, dominating the court to top Queen’s in a final set score of 25-22, winning them the match.

The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team returns home next weekend to challenge York on Saturday, November 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall, followed by a match against McMaster at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, also on home court.
