Box Score The Western Mustangs women's hockey team recovered from Friday's home loss with an exciting road win against the Windsor Lancers tonight at Windsor Arena. The Mustangs and Lancers found themselves tied after regulation play and would look to overtime and inevitably a shootout to decide a winner. Rookie
Natasha Panahi took Western's third shot and beat Windsor goalie Karlyle Robinson for a 3-2 Mustang victory.
After Friday night’s performance, the Mustangs had to regroup as a team in order to beat the competitive Lancers, just behind them in the OUA standings. However, the Mustangs' Carly Rolph answered the Lancer goal within thirty seconds, with assist from the Gosling duo,
Cassidy Gosling and
Katelyn Gosling. The score remained tied into the first intermission, with both teams anxious to pull the lead.
The score stayed 1-1 for most of the second until Mustang Assistant Captain,
Tara Cation scored an unassisted goal late in the frame, giving Western the lead for first time of the game. With a steady period of goaltending from veteran Campbell, the Lancers were unable to score in the second, leaving the Mustangs with the momentum heading into the third.
With the score close both teams came back onto the ice with intensity and intent to win. Windsor Lancer Krysten Bortolotti tied the score up halfway through third and forced the game into overtime.
A four on four five minute overtime period was used to help decide a victor, and although each team had its chances to put the game away, both teams would look to a shootout to resolve this close contest.
First up for Western was third year
Katelyn Gosling, followed by teammates
Jessica Ross and Panahi on the shootout lineup. Windsor opened up the shooting and, but Campbell stopped the first Lancer shot. Gosling also missed her opportunity, so the game was still up for grabs.
Campbell would stop the second and Mustang
Jessica Ross would also see her shot saved by Lancer goalie Robinson. With Windsor’s third shooter ready to go, #Campbell# would go on to save the Lancer’s final shot and leave the weight of the win on young Panahi.
Pahahi proved her competitive mentality and ability to play under pressure, seizing her shootout chance. With a final score of 3-2, the Mustangs left the Windsor Arena with two points for the weekend.
The Mustangs will take this road victory onto next weekend's road trip against Waterloo on November 24
th and Laurier on November 25
th.
