Western fights off Warriors for 3-2 win

Box Score The Western Mustangs women's hockey team travelled to play against the Waterloo Warriors today and returned victorious. With Olivia Ross in net, the Mustangs took a 3-2 win over the Warriors.

The first period proved most entertaining from both teams as Western scored less than two minutes into the game, giving the team a 1-0 lead over Waterloo that wouldn’t last for long. Defencemen Katelyn Gosling stretched a long pass to OUA leader Stacey Scott who fed the puck to rookie Kryshanda Green, and the two-pass play ultimately beat Waterloo goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis
with Green's shot.

The Warriors did not take too kindly to Western’s early goal and took advantage of a subsequent power play to Marlowe Pecord and put one past Mustangs’ goaltender Ross. Waterloo would not only tie the game up during the first, but would also take a 2-1 with only ten minutes into the game. Warrior Lindsey O'Neill found the back of the net, with assists from teammate Carolyn Burke.

With the Mustangs down early on, Stacey Scott dug for the puck in a solo effort against the Waterloo defense and prevailed with a goal of her own tying the score up 2-2 for the end of the first. The goal was Scott's seventh of the season, totaling 15 points in 15 games to remain on the OUA leaderboard.

Western and Waterloo returned to the ice after the first period intermission ready to fight it out for the lead and the win. With penalties affecting both teams in the second, Western fought for success on a five on three power play goal from assistant captain Katelyn Gosling, with a solid assist from line mate Tara Cation.  With the defencemen wrapping up the scoring for Western late in the second, the Mustangs took the lead into the third period.

Waterloo put Western to the test in the third, outshooting the visiting team 37-28 overall, but the Mustangs kept the Warriors at bay and took the win against Waterloo, for the second time this season. The Mustangs now sit fourth in the OUA with a 7-2-1 record. Western remains in Waterloo to play Sir Wilfred Laurier University tomorrow, a team on a hot streak with nine straight wins. Puck drops tomorrow against the Golden Hawks at 7:30 pm at Columbia Icefields Arena.
