Men's Volleyball Preview: Western vs. Windsor

After a weekend of intense competition, the Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team heads on the road tonight to face the Windsor Lancers in the team’s ninth game of the OUA regular season. This past weekend’s action keeps the Mustangs in third place for the 2012-13 season with a record of 6-2 after a straight set win against York on Friday and a close four set loss to the undefeated McMaster Marauders.

Co-captain Garrett May continues to hold first place in the OUA with 135 kills, 152 points, and 5.43 points per game.

The Mustangs charge into the Lancers’ lane tonight, with the contest beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Windsor Lancers – Wednesday, November 28, 8:00 p.m.

Finishing fourth in the OUA last season with a record of 11-7, the Lancers earned a spot in the quarter-finals before falling to the Waterloo Warriors. Last year’s quarter-finals wasn’t the only thing the Lancers lost, as Harrison Oake, Windsor’s leading-point-man and third OUA ranked star, with 3.9 points per set and 3.4 kills per set, said goodbye to the Lancer uniform at the end of last season. Despite the losses, the Lancers are focusing on this season and have a great lineup to back them up.

6-foot-5, fifth-year veteran, Kyle Williamson returns to the courts for the 2012-2013 season. Williamson has a remarkable record starting in the 2010-2011 season, earning OUA First-Team and CIS First-Team-All-Canadian honours, along with being named the OUA Player of the Year. Following suit last season, Williamson made OUA First-Team last season as well as CIS Second-Team-All Canadian and currently sits in seventh place in the OUA this season with 104 kills and 3.9 points per game. In addition to Williamson, Windsor hosts a young team this season with 10 of the 15 players in first or second year.  The Windsor Lancers have their eyes on the playoffs, but most recently fell 1-3 (19-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-21) to nationally ranked McMaster and 0-3 (23-25, 21-25, 23-25) to York over the weekend, denting their playoff path.

The Mustangs will meet the Lancers for the first time this season tomorrow, Wednesday, November 28 at 8:00 p.m. in Windsor, Ontario at the St. Denis Centre.
