Weekend Preview: Mustangs take to the road this weekend vs. Guelph and Brock

Guelph Preview:
Saturday, November 10 @ 2pm - Guelph

The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team enters a two game road trip this weekend as one of the hottest teams in the OUA. The Lady ‘Stangs finished this past weekend defeating Windsor and previously Queen’s to propel themselves to third in the competitive OUA with an impressive 7-2 record. The nationally-ranked Mustangs are led by strong goaltending from Kelly Campbell. The Mustangs look for more of the same competitive action from Guelph, a team that sits just below them in the OUA West standings. Western puts its five game winning streak on the line against Guelph’s four game unbeaten streak and this contest could be an early playoff preview.

The Gryphons are led by Amanda Parkins who shows dynamics with the puck, already netting seven goals to put her near the top in all of the CIS. Forwards Jessica Pinkerton and Christine Grant have also been very active on the score sheet, propelling Guelph to such as fast start. Brooke Siddall has played every minute between the pipes for Guelph – piling up two shutouts in the process – and her play is a huge factor in Guelph’s current unbeaten streak.

Western trains for top midseason form with its mind on a CIS berth in March. Coach Chris Higgins’ squad sits third in the OUA after putting a loss on Queen’s scoreboard last weekend. Forward Carly Rolph is an offensive leader for the purple and white so far with six goals on the young season. Teammate, sophomore Kendra Deller has chipped in with 12 points herself to date. Goalie Kelly Campbell continues to be one of the dominant forces in all the CIS with three shutouts, a .949 save percentage and a very stingy 1.82 goals against average, helping Western to seven wins already this season.

This contest takes place in Guelph at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon and will be live streamed on SSN Canada.

Brock Preview
Sunday, November 11 @ 3:15pm - St. Catharines

The Western women’s hockey team finishes its two game weekend road stand in St. Catharines veresus the Brock Badgers on Sunday. Western sits amidst the top of the OUA and will face a Badger team still looking for their first win in the young season. The Mustangs will be sure not to overlook a hungry opponent since Western is right in the thick for playoff positioning.

The Badgers have a balanced offensive attack led by Leigh Vanderveen who leads the team with five points, as well as Jessica Fickel who notched three goals so far. Emily Kelly has seen most of the minutes in net for Brock and already stopped 214 pucks in six contests. Kelly keeps her team in games while the young squad looks to find its scoring touch.

The Lady ‘Stangs look to make their way to the top of the OUA and the scoring abilities of Carly Rolph who has six on the year has been a big reason for the current standings. Teammate Kendra Deller has contributed in a big way with twelve points as the purple and white are starting to find the back of the net. Goaltender Kelly Campbell looks in midseason form with an astonishing .949 save percentage and a miniscule 1.82 goals against average – shaping up to be one of the best in the CIS.

This contest will be held in St. Catharines on Sunday afternoon at 3:15pm. It will be live streamed on SSN Canada’s website.
