Weekend Preview: Mustangs on the road against Waterloo and UOIT

Western at Waterloo - Friday, January 11

The Purple and White take their 13-game winning streak on the road this weekend as they travel to Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors. The Mustangs are coming off a big 7-1 home victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks, while the Warriors are looking to snap a three game losing streak following a 4-3 loss to the York Lions last Friday.

Leading the Warriors is forward Justin Larson who is currently tied for first in CIS scoring with 28 points (13 goals and 15 assists).  Larson and the Warriors will be looking for revenge after their last meeting with the Mustangs ended in a 6-5 shootout loss.

The Mustangs powerful offence which ranks first in the CIS in goals per game is lead by forwards Matt Clarke who is also tied for first place in CIS scoring with 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists) and Steven Reese who is currently second in CIS scoring with 27 points (5 goals, 22 assists) this season. Look for a team effort on offence as well as strong goaltending from Josh Unice between the pipes, as the Mustangs look to add another win to the streak.

Puck drop is scheduled for Friday January 11, 7:30 p.m. in Waterloo at the CIF Arena.

Western at UOIT - Saturday, January 12

Following a trip to Waterloo, the Mustangs will continue their road trip by heading to Oshawa to face the UOIT Ridgebacks for the second time in two weeks. The Mustangs got the best of the Ridgebacks in their last meeting pulling off the 7-1 victory at Thompson Arena this past weekend.

The Ridgebacks have relied on a balanced offensive attack which is led by junior forward Luke VanMoerkerke who leads the team in points with 18 and assists with 12 this season. The play of young freshman netminder Byrce O’Hagen will be crucial if the Ridgebacks look to defeat the Mustangs. O’Hagan has been between the pipes for almost all of the Ridgebacks games this season and they will be relying on strong play from their netminder to help pull off the win.

The Mustangs will be looking for a repeat of the last times these two teams met, when the Mustangs had a surge of offence from all four lines with seven different goal scorers including forwards Shaun Furlong and Ryan Kirk getting their first goals of the season, as well as tough defensive play and sharp goaltending from Unice.

Puck drop is scheduled for Saturday January 12, 7:30 in Oshawa at the UOIT Campus Ice Center.
