Women’s vs. Windsor – 6:00 p.m.

The start of a new year often comes with prosperity and the Windsor Lancers are hoping for some to blow in their direction this year. The Windsor Lancers women’s volleyball team finished twelfth place in the OUA in the 2011-2012 season, and hold down the same spot this year with a 2-9 record. The Lancers will try to raise the bar to defeat fifth place Mustangs.

The young Lancer team is led by 2011-2012 OUA Second-Team All-Star, Kaila Seguin. Seguin will lead the team to the court for their first game of 2013 and try to reverse the fates of their last meeting with the Mustangs.

Most recently the Windsor Lancers fell in five close sets to the Western Mustangs last year on November 28 in Windsor losing 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 14-15).

Western enters the second half with a 6-4 record, sitting in fifth place in the OUA, only four points behind the second place York Lions. Team captain
Rebecca Oxland ranks second in Ontario with 4.48 points per game and will look to continue her strong season as she leads the Mustangs onto the court for their first game of 2013.

The debut game of the year is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday night in Alumni Hall.

Men’s vs. Windsor – 8:00 p.m.

After a first half that saw them go 2-7 the Lancers started 2013 off on the right foot, defeating the Mustangs for the bronze medal at the York Excalibur Volleyball Classic a few weeks ago. A previous meeting between the two teams on November 28, 2012 in Windsor, was not in the Lancers’ favour, as they fell to the Mustangs 3-2.

With the help of fifth-year veteran Kyle Williamson to lead the young team, Windsor will try and raise their season record. Williamson has a remarkable record starting in the 2010-2011 season, earning OUA First-Team and CIS First-Team-All-Canadian honours, along with being named the OUA Player of the Year. Following suit last season, Williamson made OUA First-Team last season as well as CIS Second-Team-All Canadian.

Western comes into 2013 as the third ranked team in Ontario with a 7-2 record. The Mustangs aim to climb to the top of the standings in the second half, and enter Friday’s game only two points behind the second place Waterloo Warriors and four behind the undefeated McMaster Marauders.

The Mustangs will meet the Lancers for the second time this season and this year, Friday, January 11 at 8:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
