The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team returned to the court last weekend to challenge the Windsor Lancers and took their first victory of 2013 defeating the Lancers in three quick sets. The team looks to keep their momentum this weekend as they step back on to the court to challenge the rival Queen’s Gaels and the Royal Military College Paladins in Alumni Hall.
The Mustangs currently hold a 2012-2013 OUA record of 8-2 with a recent two game winning streak, putting them in currently in third place in the OUA.
Western continues to be led by Garrett May who leads the OUA with 167 kills, 5.15 points per game, and a total 185 points.
Queen’s Gaels – Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 p.m. - Alumni Hall
The Queen’s Gaels are travelling past their Eastern boundaries to challenge the Western Mustangs for the second time this season after the two teams met up almost exactly two months ago. Their first go round saw the Mustangs pick up a 3-1 victory on the Gaels home court in Kingston. Currently holding fourth place in the OUA with a regular season record of 7-4, the Gaels sit right behind the third place Mustangs, making Saturday’s contest a crucial one for both sides.
Most recently, the Queen’s rallied with the Waterloo Warriors last Sunday where they came up just short against the powerhouse Warriors. The Gaels put up a competitive battle but were unable to joust the Warriors off their path and fell short in five sets (28-30, 25-12, 25-22, 15-25, 11-15), losing a devastating 3-2.
Lead by Mike Tomlinson, with 168 points, good for second place in the OUA, Queen’s hopes to take charge of the court this weekend in effort to reverse the fates of last weekend.
Men’s vs. RMC – Sunday, January 20 at 3:00 p.m. - Alumni Hall
Coached by Steve Leknois, the Royal Military College of Canada Paladins are winless this season, holding an 0-11 record. Sitting in last place in the OUA with two games for and 33 games against, RMC comes into Sunday’s contest against Western as the underdogs. Today’s game marks the second meeting of the year between the two teams with the Mustangs taking their previous meeting in November in straight sets.
More recently the Paladins stepped on the court in search of a win against the Guelph Gryphons but were unsuccessful falling 0-3 (19-25, 11-25, 19-25), repeating a pattern they saw in the first half of the 2012-2013 OUA regular season.
The Paladins will be looking to gain some momentum for the season’s remaining games when they hit the court against the Mustangs.
