Box Score LONDON, Ont. — The Western men’s basketball team took on the Lakehead Thunderwolves for the second time this weekend. Unfortunately, the Mustangs fell short last night, but hoped to turn it around tonight. However, after a hard fought game against Lakehead, the Mustangs lost 90-52.
The game started out with a great jump shot from
Greg Morrow to get things rolling. Lakehead’s Greg Carter, who has been great for his team this season, found offensive success tonight. He continued to make clutch three-pointers early in the game and drove to the hoop with authority. Strong defense from the Mustangs limited Lakehead’s ability to string a run of points together. Mustangs
Quinn Henderson and
Ryan Higgins moved the ball well and hit their shots to keep the Mustangs in the game. The first-quarter remained close and ended with the score tied 18-18
In the second-quarter, both teams displayed excellent defense and hustled for loose balls. This resulted in a relatively fast-paced game with both teams moving quickly down the court trying to capitalize on the fast break.
Charlie Drouin initiated the energetic quarter with a solid three-pointer off of the assist from Morrow. Coming off the bench,
Elliot Dooley had a solid performance for the Mustangs, taking the ball straight to the rim, often drawing the foul. The second-quarter ended with the score 36-33 in favour of the Thunderwolves.
The Thunderwolves came out strong in the second half, moving the ball well and finding the open man for an easy jumper. Great defense from Lakehead paired with a struggling Western offense increased the margin significantly. As Western struggled to find their rhythm, Lakehead built a secure lead. The third-quarter ended with the score 60-43 in favour of the Thunderwolves.
Entering the fourth-quarter, the Mustangs had no other alternative but to increase their intensity in order to avoid another loss. In an attempt to rally his team, Morrow began playing exceptional offense, scoring the first seven points for Western. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, Lakehead shot well from beyond the arc for the entire fourth-quarter. They were able to make six consecutive three-pointers, which essentially sealed their victory. The Thunderwolves would come out on top, defeating the Mustangs 90-52.
Morrow finished the game with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Mustangs will hit the court again on Wednesday, January 23 when they visit the Brock Badgers. Tip off is at 8:00 p.m.
