Weekend Preview: Mustangs face Ryerson and Laurier

Ryerson Rams – Saturday, January 19 – 2:00 p.m. in Toronto

This Saturday the Mustangs women’s hockey team heads to Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams for the first time this season. It’s also the first of two meetings in the next two weeks between both these two teams, so look for both teams to try and get a feel for each other early. The Mustangs are coming off a 6-3 win against Brock on Sunday while the Rams are coming off a tough 5-2 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The young Rams team relies on a strong team effort on the game sheet with well balanced team offence. Melissa Wronzberg leads all Rams skaters with eight points on the season (3 goals and 4 assists).

Lead by team captain Carly Rolph the Mustangs will be making their first trip to the Mattamy Athletic Centre, better known as Maple Leaf Gardens and the former home to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Puck drop is set for Saturday January, 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

Laurier Golden Hawks – Sunday, January 20 – 4:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena

This weekend the Western Mustangs women’s hockey team prepares for a huge game as the ninth-ranked Mustangs host the number four Laurier Golden Hawks. Coming into this weekend’s action the Golden Hawks are riding a four game winning streak as they take to the road for a two game road trip, while the Stangs are looking to rebound from a road trip that saw them go 1-1 last weekend with a loss to Guelph and a win against Brock.

This will be the third meeting between these two team in the regular with the Stangs winning both contests, the first being a big 7-2 win at Thompson Arena to open the season then going on the road, pulling off the 2-1 overtime victory at Laurier just prior to the winter break.

This game promises to be a good one, the Golden Hawks are second in the CIS in shots on goal and fifth in goals per game with 3.74 (second overall in total goals with 71 on the season).  The team is led by junior forward Laura Brooker who has 20 points on the season (13 goals, 7 assists) which ties her for 14th in CIS scoring. The Golden Hawks will also look to senior forward Devon Skeats who is second on the Hawks with 11 goals this season, five of which have come on the team’s nationally third ranked power play.

Tasked with trying to stop Laurier’s high powered offence will be netminder Kelly Campbell. This season Campbell has been one of the country’s top goalies, Campbell has the league’s fourth best save percentage at .942 while stopping 484 shots this season which is second best in the CIS. The Stangs will look to sophomore forward Stacey Scott and defenseman Katelyn Gosling to help lead the offensive attack. Scott leads the Stangs in both points and goals this season (20 points and 12 goals), while Gosling the puck moving defenseman, leads the team with 14 assists tying her for sixth in the CIS.

With both teams having high powered offences as we as strong defensive play look for both teams to come out firing on all cylinders as they try to climb up the CIS standings.

Puck drop is scheduled for Sunday January, 20, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
