Weekend Preview: Mustangs vs undefeated McMaster and York

The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team heads on the road this weekend in hopes of extending their four-game winning streak as the push to the playoffs intensifies. The Mustangs have a 5-0 record on the road and plan to keep that momentum as they challenge McMaster and York this weekend.

The Mustangs currently hold a 2012-2013 OUA record of 10-2 keeping them in third place in the OUA. Just two points behind the Waterloo Warriors and six behind McMaster.

Western continues to be led by Garrett May who leads the OUA with 188 kills, 5.18 points per game, and a total 212 points.

McMaster- Friday, January 25 8:00 p.m.

First place in the OUA, and second ranked in the CIS, McMaster remains undefeated in the 2012-2013 OUA regular season. They have been a powerhouse all season long and have managed to maintain a perfect season thus far. The Marauders and Mustangs’ last meeting cost Western a win, with McMaster taking the match 3-1.

Most recently, the Marauders challenged the no. 9 CIS Waterloo Warriors handing them their second loss of the season (25-23, 25-29, 29-27), followed by a test against the Guelph Gryphons (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17), allowing McMaster to keep its perfect record and top standing in the OUA conference. The McMaster Marauders hold a regular season record of 13-0, and with a four point lead at the top of OUA.

2011-2012 OUA Second-Team All-Stars, 6-foot-4 Kevin Stevens and 6-foot-2 Jori Mantha will step back on the court along with 2012 OUA All-Rookie members Alex Elliott and Dan Groenveld to attempt to keep the Marauders’ 13-game winning streak alive.

York- Saturday, January 26 8:00 p.m.

The York Lions currently sit in fifth place in the OUA standings with a regular season record of 6-7 and trail the Mustangs by eight points. The last regular season meeting between the two squads ended quickly as the Mustangs topped the Lions in three straight sets back in November.

The Lions challenged the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, January 18 (25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18), taking a 3-1 victory. On Saturday, January 19 the Lions battled the Waterloo Warriors (15-25, 28-26, 25-23, 23-25, 16-18), where the fates were not as kinds as the Warriors overcame the Gryphons dominating the court to take the match 3-2.

York’s leading player Ray Szeto sits fifth in the OUA standings with 177 kills, 198 points and a 4.04 point per game average.

The Western Mustangs travel to Hamilton on Friday where they will face the McMaster Marauders at 8:00 p.m. followed by a test against the York Lions on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in Toronto.
