KITCHENER, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team continued their strong season this past Sunday in Kitchener and despite a home field advantage for Laurier, the Mustangs defeated the Golden Hawks 21-3 and the Trent Excalibur 16-5.
Â
Western's first game was against Laurier, and they were unstoppable from the first draw. Michelle Farrugia opened up scoring one minute into the game. Western continued to bury ten more goals, and Laurier got on the board with three goals late in the first half. Western's defense was relentless, and goaltender Cait Mancuso had a shutout in the second half. Tawnie Johnson led the team in points with four goals and two assists.
Â
"Everyone was on that game," said Coach Dave Hastings. "Cait Mancuso was outstanding and looked at her best. Our transition game was excellent and our defense was very tough. We added Micheala Naumovski to the D-line and she was very strong with an aggressive style we like."
Â
Sunday afternoon, Trent and Western traded goals back and forth for the first eighteen minutes of the half until Western countered with six straight goals to take a 7-3 lead at halftime. Western dominated in the second half scoring four straight goals, while Trent added two. The Mustangs added another five goals for an overall 16-5 victory.
Â
Hastings was impressed with his team's performance in the second game. "Trent is a solid, well coached team with very good goaltending. It was a good game for us to see a different style of play and the team made great adjustments. Both Sheehan and Tasha had strong games and moved the ball very well and we were equally impressed with the play of freshman Megan Wilkins today."  Â

The Mustangs will take on York and Guelph this Saturday at the Varsity Stadium in Toronto, then follow up with a home matchup against Brock on Sunday to conclude the regular season. Â
