Mustangs earn first shutout of the season with 3-0 win over Laurier

Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. – Zach Harnden set up all three goals and Greg Dodds did the rest for the Mustangs on Thursday night, stopping 29 shots to lead Western to a 3-0 road victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Sun Life Financial Arena.

Dodds' first OUA shutout came in his first regular season start as the rookie goaltender stepped in to give Josh Unice the night off for the first time this season. The backstop has been unbeatable in the most literal sense for the Mustangs this year, failing to let in a single goal during all of his preseason and regular season play.

The first-year netminder is coming off a career year with the North Bay Trappers of the NOJHL last season that saw him lead the Trappers to the NOJHL championship and pick up the title of NOJHL Top Goaltender. His performance Thursday was just one more indication that he is having no trouble translating his success in the NOJHL to the fast-paced OUA and his shutout stands as Western's first of the young 2013 season.

On the other side of the rink the Mustangs were able to keep pressure on the Golden Hawks all night, firing 34 shots on Golden Hawks' goaltender Duncan Long and converting once per frame. With the three goal performance on Thursday, Western has recorded at least three goals in each of its five contests this season.

Matt Clarke, Daniel Erlich, and Harnden all registered at least a point to extend their point-streaks to five games each, meaning the three forwards have managed to record a point in every single one of the Mustangs' contests to start the 2013 season. The three forwards have been on fire to start the season and have combined for an impressive 29 points in only five games.

Harnden's three assists give him nine points this season and helped set up goals from Clarke, Stephen Gaskin, and Kyle De Coste on the night. Erlich continued to stand out for the Mustangs, dishing out two assists of his own to give the second-year forward a team-leading eleven points on the season.

The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday night as they head to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
