Mustangs pick up 3-2 overtime win over Waterloo

Box Score

WATERLOO, Ont. -- Michelle Saunders potted the overtime winner, sending the Western Mustangs women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Sun Life Financial Arena in Waterloo.

It was the second win in as many days for Western after goalie Kelly Campbell registered a 36-save performance one night before, helping the Mustangs shut out the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0.

Waterloo was also in action on Saturday, squeezing out a 4-3 overtime win over the Windsor Lancers in a game that saw the Warriors muster two goals in the third to force the extra period.

While they showed the same fight and determination as they did in their game against the Lancers, the Warriors were unable to achieve a similar result today.

For the second day in a row, Waterloo entered the third period down to their opponents and managed to push their way back into the game with the help of forward Carolyn Burke. After scoring one of her team's two third period goals against Windsor on Saturday, Burke found the back of the Western net with less than five minutes left in the third today to help earn the Warriors gain at least one point again.

In the end, however, it was the Mustangs who out-battled the Warriors and were able to remain undefeated on the season at 2-0-0. Saunders' game-winning shot 3:07 into the extra frame sailed over the Waterloo defender and found the top of the net, silencing the home crowd and sending the Western bench piling onto the ice.

It was a fitting ending to a close game that saw the two teams alternate scoring with neither of them able to accumulate a lead of more than one. The Mustangs never trailed the Warriors, holding a one-goal lead on two occasions before Waterloo struck back to tie the game.

Yet the Mustangs defensive performance on Sunday was still impressive ensuring the two regulation goals, scored off the sticks of Megan Taylor and Ally Galloway, would be enough to earn them at least a single point.

Taylor opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game while Galloway put the Mustangs back on top in the second period, responding to a Waterloo goal at 14:16 with a goal of her own less than 15 seconds later.

Netminder Kelly Campbell got the win for Wester, stopping 23 shots to record her second victory in as many days.

The Mustangs will have a break before taking back to the ice Saturday, October 12 at Thompson Arena for a matchup against the York Lions at 5:00 p.m.  York opened their season with a 5-2 victory over the Ryerson Rams and will be looking for their second victory of the season when they head to London next weekend.
