TORONTO - The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team defeated the McMaster Marauders 17-4 for the second time this season on Sunday, October 6, to extend their 2013-2014 undefeated regular season record to 5-0.
Although McMaster opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, the Mustangs were quick to respond with three goals of their own before trading points with the Marauders to set the score at 6-3 for Western at the end of the half.
The Mustangs dominated the second half, taking a 10-3 lead and limiting the Marauders to just one goal in the half. Fran Bonomi scored five goals in the win as the Mustangs ended the match with a final score of 17-4.
Along with Bonomi's outstanding effort, strong performances came from Heather Pearson (three goals, one assist), Tasha MacDonald (two goals, three assists) and Tawnie Johnson (three goals, one assist). Once again, the defensive line of Alexa McAllister, Kristen Stafford, Jesse Porter and Jenna Clarke proved resilient against the oncoming attack.
Western's head coach Dave Hastings said the high number of assists indicated the unselfish play and teamwork displayed by the Mustangs, and was pleased with the win. "We had a bit of a slow start," says Hastings, "but the team started shooting with confidence in the second half."
The Mustangs are back on the field on Saturday, October 12 as they host Laurier and UOIT at home.
