Gryphons outlast Mustangs in tight-knit 4-3 victory

Box Score GUELPH, Ont. -- A late push by the Mustangs kept Guelph fans on the edge of their seats but was not enough to overcome a one goal deficit on Sunday as Western fell to the Gryphons 4-3 at Gryphon Central Arena in their second game in as many days.

A power play with just over three minutes left afforded Western an opportunity to send the game to overtime but the team was unable to get the puck past Guelph backstop Stephanie Nehring. With the penalty expired and the seconds ticking down, Guelph looked to have a sure-fire insurance empty-netter but a spectacular diving play by Michelle Saunders bought the Mustangs a little more time.

Her effort almost paid off too, as the Mustangs created an opportunity in the slot with less than 10 seconds to go. But the puck glanced wide of the net and ended up in the corner, allowing the finals seconds to tick off the clock, sending the Gryphons to their league-leading ninth win of the season.

Saunders was a big factor for the Mustangs on Sunday and not just for her third-period defensive effort; the fourth-year defenseman also potted two of Western's three goals in the losing effort to give her three goals and six points on the season. Her big performance Sunday came less than 24 hours after she notched two assists in Western's 5-1 win over Brock on Saturday night.

Also scoring for the Mustangs on Sunday afternoon was Natasha Panahi, marking her second goal of the season, and whose second period goal put Western back within one. Assists on the afternoon came from Stacey Scott, Madison Turk, Marlowe Pecora, Casey Rosen, and Cassidy Gosling.

Even with the loss Sunday the Mustangs remain in good position in the OUA at fourth place with 14 points and are currently four points out of top spot in the league. They will, however, have to wait a week to gain any more ground as their next game takes place Sunday, Nov. 17 against Queen's.

That game will kick off at 4:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena and will mark the first of three straight games for the Mustangs at home. Queen's currently sits in second place in the OUA with 16 points and will be looking to hold off a rested Western squad when they roll into town for the game. Fans from around the world can catch all of the Mustangs' action live right here.
