Weekend Preview: Mustangs return home to take on UOIT and Queen’s

After suffering their first two consecutive losses of the season last week to Ottawa and McGill, the Mustangs (5-3-0) will look to turn things around when they return to Thompson Arena for a pair of games this weekend against the UOIT Ridgebacks (3-5-1) and the Queen's Gaels (5-0-4).

Western currently sits two points out of third place, which is currently held by both York (6-4-0) and Toronto (6-4-0) with 12 points. Fortunately for the Mustangs, they have a game in hand on both of those teams and will have an opportunity to put themselves right back in the race with two wins this weekend.

Daniel Erlich continues to amaze for Western as he stretched his point-streak to all eight of the Mustangs' regular season games with four points in the team's last two matchups. Zach Harnden also stayed hot, notching a goal and two assists in the game against McGill to give him an impressive 14 points on the season.

The Western squad will be looking to capture two more wins this weekend as they prepare to face the Ridgebacks and the Gaels as regular season action continues in men's hockey.

The first team rolling into town this weekend is UOIT, who will be looking to climb back up to .500 in the East division when they take to the ice at Thompson Arena on Friday. Although they sit a full seven points behind Queen's, UOIT is one of only four teams to take the Gaels to extra time this season and come away with two points.

The Ridgebacks are led in scoring by fourth-year forward Luke VanMoerkerke, who has registered five goals and three assists for eight points in eight games. Matt Pasztor has provided plenty of offense from the blue-line for UOIT, putting up a goal and five assists on the season to lead the Ridgebacks' defencemen and rank second on the team.

If the Mustangs want to gain four points this weekend they're going to have to get past Queen's, the only team that is yet to lose in regulation this season. That being said, the Golden Gaels have lost four games in extra time—three in shootouts—and one of their five wins this season came as a forfeit against the suspended Ryerson Rams.

A big reason for Queen's success this season has been the play of their goaltenders; through nine games this season the Golden Gaels' net-minders, Kevin Bailie and Chris Clarke, have only allowed a league-low 20 goals. The only other team to allow that few goals this season is Lakehead, who have been undefeated in their last five games to sit with a 7-1-0 record on the season.
