Mustangs top Varsity Blues in straight sets

Box Score LONDON, Ont.- The Western Mustang's men's volleyball team hosted the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday evening as part of a two-game home-stand this weekend and came out with the win in three straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-20).

"We executed during key, clutch moments but the sets were close, even in the first and second sets," said head coach Jim Sage. "I give [the team] credit for their poise when it came close in the third set."

Western started off strong in the first set, and did not once vanquish the lead to Toronto resulting in a set score of 25-21.

An equally early lead in the second frame, complimented by strong defense tactics allowed he Mustangs to take the second set 25-20.

The third and final set was intense as Toronto turned up the heat, fighting to stay in the match and maintaining the lead until quite late in the game. Stellar serving from Sean McKay quickly brought the Mustangs back where they wanted to be and with a set winning kill from Gavin Taylor, the Mustangs not only took the set, but also the match 3-0.

Mustang Garrett May had a game-high 15 kills, while Phil James added 11 of his own and two solo blocks. William Colucci led the Varsity Blues with 14 kills and two solo blocks.
