Late goal leads Ravens over Mustangs in Ottawa

Box Score OTTAWA – Josh Unice stood on his head but the Western Mustangs were unable to reward his effort, falling to the Carleton Ravens 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Ice House in OUA hockey action.

After the two teams exchanged goals midway through the third period to tie the game at 2-2, Tyler Taylor beat Unice to give the Ravens the final advantage with 4:17 remaining in the final frame. The goal ensured that the Mustangs would walk away without a point for the first time in three games, as Western had posted three straight wins over UOIT, Queen's, and RMC heading into Saturday's contest.

Unice, who was given the night off yesterday in Western's 6-1 victory over RMC, frustrated the Ravens for much of the game, stopping 10 shots in the first, a whopping 22 in the second, and seven more in the final frame. He ended the night with 36 saves on 39 shots while his counterpart, Francis Dupuis, was only forced to make 16 for the win.

The Mustangs opened the scoring only 1:29 into the game off a goal from Stefan Salituro, who is quietly putting together a great season with six goals and nine points in ten games. Western held that lead for the rest of the period, despite losing key defenceman Matt Paltridge for ten minutes after the veteran was called for checking to the head at 3:47.

The Ravens would even it up in the second, however, getting a goal from rookie centre Mitch Zion just under four minutes into the frame. A period and a half later they would grab their first lead of the night on the power play as Jeff Hayes capitalized on a Steve Reese penalty for goaltender interference.

Carleton's first lead of the night would not last for long, as Kyle De Coste registered his fourth goal of the season on an unassisted effort 47 seconds later. But Tyler Taylor's goal with less than five minutes remaining in the frame sealed the deal for the Ravens and gave them their second win in as many games.

With the win the Ravens pass Ottawa and move into fourth place in the OUA East Division. The Mustangs, on the other hand, remain in fourth place in the West Division, although the loss on Saturday means they now only have one game in hand on third-place Toronto.

The Mustangs will now have just under a week of rest until they return home to welcome the second-place Windsor Lancers to Thompson Arena on November 29. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. and will act as a preview for the big matchup between the two teams that will take place at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, on December 16 as part of the 2014 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival.

Notes: Western winger Daniel Erlich had his point-streak snapped at 11 games. The sophomore forward had six goals and 16 assists for a league-leading 22 points during that span. With his third assist against UOIT last Friday, Erlich hit the 50-point regular season mark with the Mustangs in only his 39th regular season game.

Salituro is hot for the Mustangs right now. In his last five games he has put up three goals and three assists for six points. He is currently on a two game point streak, during which time he has compiled two goals and one assist.

Prior to this afternoon's game, Western and Carleton had only met in regular season play twice in the last six years, matchups which the Mustangs won 5-1 and 4-2. Those meetings happened in 2009-10 and 2011-12, respectively.
