Weekend Preview: Western on the road against Ottawa and McGill

The Western Mustangs will wrap up their longest road trip of the season this weekend when they travel to Ottawa on Friday and Montreal on Saturday to take on the Gee-Gees (3-5-0) and the Redmen (5-1-1).

It's usually safe to assume that a team would be happy to be closing out a road trip but the Mustangs seem to be enjoying this particular stretch, putting up two wins in as many games against Laurier and Ryerson and outscoring their opponents by a margin of 9-4. A significant factor in the wins was the strong performance of rookie goaltender Greg Dodds, who shut out the Golden Hawks in his first OUA start before contributing to the win over the Rams with a scoreless period of relief on Saturday.

Also coming up big for the Mustangs over the last two games was Zach Harnden, who notched three helpers in the game against Laurier and scored two of the Mustangs' six goals in Saturday's thriller against the Rams. Both Harnden and Daniel Erlich will be looking to continue their six-game point-streaks when the Mustangs face Ottawa on Friday night.

The squad's recent success can also be credited to an increase in offense from the blue line, since the last two games have seen the Mustangs defensive-core compile six points between four players. Matt Paltridge and Stephen Gaskin both put up a goal and an assist in the wins while Alex Micallef and David Corrente chipped in with one assist each. The win over the Rams was truly a full-team effort for the Mustangs as eleven players contributed offense to help Western in the 6-4 comeback win.

Ottawa Gee-Gees: Friday, November 8 - 7:00 p.m.

After opening the season with three straight losses, the Gee-Gees have come away with three wins in their last five games. They will enter Friday's matchup looking to extend their win-streak to three games after winning their last two contests against Queen's and RMC.

The Mustangs would do well to keep an eye on third-year forward Stephen Blunden, whose nine points in seven games is the most of any Ottawa player. Next to Blunden on the list of Ottawa's top scorers are Matthieu Tanguay-Theriault with eight points and Rock Regimbald with seven. Regimbald is the Gee-Gees highest scoring rookie as well as their most penalized player with 24 penalty minutes in his first eight OUA games.

McGill Redmen – Saturday, November 9 - 7:00 p.m.

Although the Mustangs and the Redmen have yet to meet in the 2013 regular season, the two teams did face off in the pre-season with McGill losing 3-2 to open the annual East West Tournament. The Redmen will be looking to avenge that loss and stay on top of the OUA East division when they host Western at McConnel Arena on Saturday.

Leading McGill in scoring this season is fourth-year defenceman Ryan Mckiernan, who has put up an impressive five goals and four assists for nine points in seven games. Close behind him is Patrick Delisle-Houde, whose two goals and six assists give him an average of 1.14 points-per-game. Delisle-Houde was a big factor for the Redmen in their 3-2 preseason loss to the Mustangs, scoring one goal and assisting on the other in the one-point defeat.
