Mustangs suffer second loss of the season at the hands of Ottawa

OTTAWA - Stephen Blunden scored two goals and Mathieu Leduc added a goal and an assist to power the Ottawa GeeGees 4-2 over the Western Mustangs men's hockey team at Sports Complex Arena on Friday night.

Greg Dodds got the start in net for the Mustangs one week after stretching his early season shutout streak to 80 minutes but had that streak busted just over six minutes into Friday's contest with a goal from Trevor Layton. Despite the loss, Dodds' 27 saves against the Gee Gees help keep him second in the OUA in goals against average at 1.29 and first in save percentage at .960.

Daniel Erlich and Kyle De Coste scored the two goals for the Mustangs on the night with De Coste potting his third of the season on a second-period power play and Erlich notching his team-leading 14th point just over a minute into the final frame. With Zach Harnden being held scoreless on Friday, Erlich is now the only Mustang to have scored a point in every single one of the Mustangs first seven games.

Matt Clarke was one of the Mustangs who had his point-streak snapped last week but he was quick to lay the foundations for another one Friday, notching two assists to give him eight assists and 11 points. Noah Schwartz also had an assist for the Mustangs Friday night, setting up Erlich's third-period goal for his first OUA point.

Ottawa's victory Friday marks their third in a row and their first against Western in over six years. More importantly, the win moves them into a tie for fourth place in the OUA East with UQTR at eight points. They will have a chance to stretch their win streak to four games when they welcome Guelph to the Sports Complex Arena Saturday night

Western, on the other hand, still sits tied for third in the West at 10 points with Ryerson, Guelph, Toronto and York, although the Mustangs have at least a game in hand on all four of those teams. They will have a chance to break away from the pack tomorrow night when they close out their road trip with a contest against McGill.

Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. and will take place at McConnell Arena in Montreal. McGill will enter the game on a three-game win streak thanks to a 3-2 win over Guelph at home on Friday.
