MONTREAL – Third period goals from Carl Gelinas and Cedric McNicoll proved costly for the Mustangs on Saturday night as Western fell 5-4 to the McGill Redmen in a fast-paced, penalty-filled affair at McConnell Arena.
Â
The Mustangs entered the final frame up 4-3 after
Matt Clarke closed out the second period with his fourth goal of the season, but Gelinas tied it up with a goal of his own just over three minutes into the third. Seven minutes later McNicoll gave the Redmen their second lead of the game and the only other goal they would need.
Â
Both teams were applying a ton of offensive pressure on Saturday as they combined for an amazing 87 shots on the night. Fourty-nine of those shots came from the Redmen as they kept
Josh Unice busy with 15 in the first, 17 in the second, and another 17 in the third, while the Mustangs managed four goals on 27 shots in the first 40 minutes to chase McGill starter Andrew Flemming from the net to start the third.
Â
Unice held his ground extremely well throughout the game but unfortunately for him, shots were not the only thing that both teams were giving up in abundance. The teams also combined for 26 infractions and 84 penalty minutes through 60 minutes on Saturday with 40 of those assessed to the Mustangs and 44 to McGill.
Â
The Redmen made the most of their power plays, converting on three of their eight to make sure the Mustangs paid for their mistakes, while Western scored two on 10 attempts. There was a three-way tie for most penalty minutes on the night with the Mustangs
Julian Cimadamore and McGill's Patrick Delisle-Houde and Alexis Millette all receiving 10-minute misconducts in the game.
Â
Daniel Erlich and
Zach Harnden stayed hot for the Mustangs on the night with Erlich putting up a goal and an assist to extend his early-season point-streak to eight games and Harnden registering three points to give him 14 on the year. Clarke also continued his hot play, notching a goal and an assist to give him four points in his last two games.
