Box Score KINGSTON, Ont. –
Kelly Campbell turned away all 33 of the shots she faced and
Ally Galloway netted the game-winner in the second period to lead the Mustangs over the Queen's Gaels 2-0 at the Kingston Memorial Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Western entered Sunday's matchup looking for revenge after taking the defending OUA champions to extra time on Nov. 17 and falling in the shootout. With the win, the Mustangs join Windsor as the only other team this season to record a regulation win against the Gaels, who entered Sunday's game ranked first in the OUA with a record of 11-1-3.
Much like the last meeting between the two teams, the game featured a goaltending battle between Mel Dodd-Moher and Campbell, who have combined to turn away 122 shots in the team's two matchups this season. Seventy-six of those saves have come from Campbell alone as the Mustangs backstop has been lights out against Queen's this season.
Both teams found themselves unable to generate any offense on the powerplay as Western went 0-for-6 and Queen's went 0-for-5. With their combined 0-for-11 performance on Sunday afternoon the two teams have now gone 0-for-16 with the man-advantage against each other this season, due in large part to strong performances from Dodd-Moher and Campbell.
Besides Galloway's goal in the second, the only other offense on the day came off the stick of
Stacey Scott with one second remaining in the final frame. In a game where both teams struggled to find the twine, Scott appeared to find her offensive touch, assisting on Galloway's goal before scoring her own in the third.
The Mustangs' win put an end to their four-game losing streak, which began on Nov. 10 with a 4-3 loss to Guelph and saw them give up 16 goals while only registering six. Despite their recent struggles, the Mustangs still sit in the middle of the pack heading into the new year, sharing fifth place in the OUA with the UOIT Ridgebacks.
The team will break for the holidays before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they will take on the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will take place at the Memorial Gardens.
