Box Score TORONTO, Ont. — The Mustangs were on the road Sunday to play their final game of the regular season against the York Lions. It's been a successful season for the team and, fittingly, they were able to end the season on a high note, defeating the Lions 3-2.
With the latest win the Mustangs have a record of 19-5, which is good enough for fourth place in the OUA standings.
The Mustangs opened up the scoring early in the first when
Carly Rolph blasted the puck past York goaltender Megan Lee to put Western up by one. But York wouldn’t let the lead last for long. With just over five minutes to play in the first, York defenseman Jennifer Petkovics beat Mustangs netminder
Olivia Ross and scored the equalizer for her team. After 20 minutes of play the score was 1-1.
The second period saw both teams fight hard to break the tie, but it wasn’t until the 17:35 mark of the frame that York’s Kristie Wilson scored an unassisted goal to give York their first lead of the game.
Western opted to switch goaltenders in the third, with
Kelly Campbell coming out to play the final 20 minutes.
Just two minutes into the final frame,
Brittany Clapham scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Rolph to tie the game at 2-2. Although the game was very discipline on the part of both teams, York was called for an interference penalty late in the third period.
On the man the advantage,
Katelyn Gosling scored to give the Mustangs the late 3-2 lead and that is the way the game would end.
