Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. – Coming off a tough loss earlier in the week to the undefeated Windsor Lancers, the Western Mustangs women’s basketball team took to the road again Saturday, heading to Waterloo for a showdown with the rival Laurier Golden Hawks in the final regular season game for both squads. In a back-and-fourth contest it came down to the final seconds, with Laurier scoring with 12 seconds left to claim the 59-58 victory.
Despite the loss the Mustangs secured home court for the first round of the OUA playoffs and will host a quarter-final matchup this coming Wednesday. Laurier will also make the trip to the post-season and will be heading to either McMaster or Western depending on the outcome of tonight’s game between Lakehead and McMaster.
Senior guard
Jenny Vaughan led the Mustangs offence on Saturday, scoring 22 points and adding four rebounds.
Laura Dally and
Annabel Hancock were second and third on the Mustangs score sheet with Dally contributing 10 points and six rebounds while Hancock added nine points and a team high eight rebounds. Countering for the Golden Hawks was Whitney Ellenor who led her team in every major category, scoring 18 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, while also contributing five assists and five blocks.
Saturday’s game showcased how evenly matched the two squads, with neither side able to establish a significant scoring run at any time during the game. Depending on how the standings shake out expect an exciting matchup if these two teams meet again next week in London.
With the regular season now in the books the Mustangs begin preparations to host an OUA quarter-final on Wednesday, February 20 at Alumni Hall. Check back later this weekend on westernmustangs.ca for more info once the team's opponent has been determined.
