Gosling sisters score twice as Campbell shuts out Laurier in Game One

Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. – Kelly Campbell stopped 45 shots, while Cassidy and Katelyn Gosling provided the offence as the Western Mustangs took game one of their OUA Semi-Final series 2-0 over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night.

With the win the Mustangs now hold a 1-0 lead in the best of three series, with game two set to go this weekend in London.

It was a family affair for the Mustangs offence on Thursday with Katelyn Gosling scoring her third goal in two games, while rookie Cassidy Gosling netted her first OUA playoff goal. Stacey Scott also had two points, assisting on both of the Mustangs goals.

Campbell was an absolute force between the pipes, stopping all 45 shots she faced, including an astounding 27 shots in the third period to cement Western’s victory.

Not surprisingly for a matchup between two intense rivals the game got off to a physical start with the Golden Hawks recording three consecutive penalties around the midway point of the period. Western was unable to capitalize on their power play opportunities, however rookie Cassidy Gosling broke through for her first OUA post-season goal, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead they’d take into the first intermission.

Not content to let her sister be the only member of the family on the score sheet, Katelyn Gosling scored her third goal of the post-season, putting Western up 2-0 with a power play marker at 6:25 of the second period. The Golden Hawks attack was hampered by another two penalties, allowing the Mustangs to take their two goal lead into the third period.

Entering the final 20 minutes the Mustangs were the ones who began to find themselves in penalty trouble, including facing a two-man disadvantage late in the frame. Despite three power play opportunities Campbell was unflappable in the Mustangs net, turning away 27 shots in the final period to preserve the shutout and give Western a 2-0 victory.

The Mustangs now head back home to the friendly confines of Thompson Arena for game two this Saturday night, with game time scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
