Mustangs lose close game to McMaster in OUA Final

HAMILTON, Ont. – A day after clinching a spot in next week’s CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship the Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team returned to the court Saturday to battle the rival McMaster Marauders in the OUA Finals. In what was easily one of the most exciting matches of the season the Mustangs lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the Marauders.

Set scores were 27-25, 24-26, 30-32, 20-25.

Garrett May led the Mustangs with 18 points, all coming on kills. Along with May four other Mustangs recorded double digits in points, with Phil James at 15, Luke Sim with 12.5, Alan Screaton with 10.5, and Justin Scapinello with 10. Jori Mantha led the Marauders with 28 points including 25 kills.

It was a hotly contested game right from the start with only one set being decided by more than a two point difference.

Western now gets set to head to the CIS Championships, taking place from March 1-3 hosted by Universite Laval in Quebec City. Check back next week on westernmustangs.ca for the tournament seeding info and schedule.
