Game Preview: Mustangs host Brock Thursday at 7 PM

With the playoffs fast approaching the Mustangs finish out their regular season schedule this week on home ice at Thompson Arena. Last weekend’s action saw the Mustangs beat Windsor on the road 7-3 then lose in a heart breaking 2-1 overtime loss at home to York. The Mustangs will be looking to put that behind them and focus on finishing strong this week against the Brock Badgers and the Windsor Lancers.

The trio of Steve Reese, Matt Clarke and Zach Harnden continue to lead the way offensively for the Stangs racking up impressive numbers along the way, all three skaters are in the CIS’s top 15 in points scored. Reese leads the trio and sits second in the country with 39 points, followed by Clarke with 38 points and Harnden with 32. Reese also leads the country in assists with 31 while Harnden is tired for the lead in goals with 20.

Not to be out done by the offensive fire power, the team also plays strong on the back end, led in net by Josh Unice. Unice is among the country’s top goaltenders this season, he currently leads the nation in wins with 19 giving him a winning percentage of .826. He also boasts an impressive .917 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.46.

Overall the 21-5 Mustangs lead the CIS in team scoring with 112 goals and goals per game, averaging 4.31 goals per contest, and own the league’s best penalty killing unit, successfully killing 90.8% of their penalties this season.

Mustangs vs. Brock Badgers - Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Starting off the final week of the season the (21-5) Mustangs host the (8-18) Brock Badgers. Heading into Thursday night’s game the Mustangs are 3-0 this season against the Badgers and the Stangs will be looking to sweep the season series and forget about the disappointing overtime loss to York.  

Looking to try and stop the Mustangs high octane offence, the Badgers will rely on freshman goalie Dalton McGrath. The former Niagara Ice Dog is in his first season with the Badgers, he has a save percentage of .910 and a goals against of 3.28 in 22 games between the pipes this season. Leading the Badgers offensively is forward Kaine Geldart who leads the team with 26 points (9 goals, 17 assists).

The Badgers desperately need a win at Thompson Arena as they fight to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the OUA West Division.
