In the last weekend of the regular season the Mustangs hit the road for a two game road trip against the UOIT Ridgebacks and the York Lions. Last weekend the Mustangs went 1-1 with a 4-1 win over the University of Waterloo on the road and a 3-2 loss in the home finally against Queens This weekend the team will not only be looking to rebound from the tough loss, but to also try and pick up some momentum heading into the playoffs.
The team will look to build off last weekends balanced offence which saw seven different Mustangs contribute on the score sheet, sophomore defenseman
Madison Turk lead all Stangs players in scoring with three points (2 goals, 1 assists), while between the pipes junior goaltender
Olivia Ross picked up her fourth win of the season.
As the team heads into the final weekend of play look for the Mustangs to be sharp and aggressive as they hope to finish the regular season on a high note. The Mustangs find themselves in fourth place in the OUA with 36 points four points behind both Queens and Guelph.
Mustangs vs. UOIT
First up is the (10-14) Ridgebacks. This is setting up to be a huge game for both teams as they both look to secure playoff spots. The Ridgebacks are sitting in seventh place in the OUA (23) with Waterloo only two points behind them. Depending on how the season finishes this could be a potential first round playoff match up preview.
The Ridgebacks are another one of the younger teams in the OUA who are also looking to pick up some momentum going into the final weekend of the regular season. Led up front by junior forward Jill Morillo who has 18 points on the season (9 goals, 9 assists).
Looking to keep Morillo and the rest of the team at bay will be Mustangs goalie
Kelly Campbell. Campbell is having an outstanding season and is one of the top goaltenders in the country, she has saved 620 shorts this season which is third best in the CIS, while her save percentage of .939 is fourth best in the CIS.
Last time these two teams met UOIT got the better of the Stangs with a 3-1 victory in Thompson arena, this is the third and final game with the series tied 1-1.
Puck drop is scheduled for Saturday February, 9th, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in Oshawa at the UOIT Campus Ice Centre.
Mustangs vs. York
In the final game of the regular season the Mustangs are in Toronto to face off against the (7-17) York Lions. Western is 1-0 against York this season and will be looking to sweep the season series on the road Sunday.
The Lions are a veteran team with lots of experience, leading the team offensively is junior forward Lisa Stathopulos who leads the team in points with 14 as well as goals with 9. Between the pipes sophomore goalie Megan Lee, Lee is currently second in the CIS with 621 stops on the season which gives her a save percentage of .908 with a goals against of 2.76.
The Mustangs will look to offensive leader’s forward
Stacey Scott and
Katelyn Gosling to help power the team past the Lions. Scott and Gosling are tied for the team lead with 24 points each, Scott leads the team in goals with 13 while Gosling leads the team in assists with 19. Strong play from Scott and Gosling will be critical for the team not only this weekend but going into the playoffs as well.
