WATERLOO, Ont.- The Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team was on the road tonight to challenge the Waterloo Warriors. The Mustangs took the Waterloo Warriors by storm to start off their weekend on the road. After a tough five set battle, the Mustangs defeating the Warriors 3-2.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10
Leading the Mustangs was
Justin Scapinello with a game high 23 points, with 19 kills on 38 attempts.
Garrett May earned 19 kills on 42 attempts with 21.5 points, while
Sean McKay contributed 52 assists.
The journey may have put the Mustangs off their game, as the first set posed to be a struggle for Western. Falling behind host Waterloo, Western could not keep up with the Warriors and dropped the first set 25-19.
Down a set, the Mustangs were determined to change their fate. Challenging the Warriors on every play, the Mustangs surged into a lead, eventually taking the set by a solid four points to give them the 25-21 set victory.
The next set was also in white and purple’s favour. Waterloo could not keep up with Western’s power, forcing the Warriors to surrender a second set win to the Mustangs. White and purple claimed the second set by a solid score of 25-20.
Up two sets meant nothing in this round, as the Warriors came on strong, eager to push this match to five sets. Rallying point for point, Waterloo managed to sneak past Western 25-22, tying the game at two sets apiece.
Tied 2-2, the Mustangs and the Warriors battled for every last point before Western was able to pull away with a lead. They closed off the set by a score of 15-10 and took the match by a score of 3-2.
Jordan Dyck led the Warriors with 14 kills and 20 points.
Due to bad weather on Friday, the Mustangs match-up against Guelph was rescheduled to take place Sunday afternoon. The Western Mustangs will head to Guelph tomorrow to challenge the Guelph Gryphons at 3:00 p.m. for their last 2012-2013 OUA regular season game.
