Two third period goals lead Mustangs over Ridgebacks

Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. — The Mustangs were on the road this afternoon taking on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Both teams fought hard throughout, but thanks to two Mustangs’ goals less than a minute apart in the third period, Western managed to take the game by a score of 3-1.

Early in the first, the Mustangs were on the powerplay after a too many men penalty was called on UOIT. Just over a minute into the man advantage, Mustangs Katelyn Gosling score the opening goal to put Western up 1-0.

Both teams would have their chances in the second with Western tallying 12 shots on net, while UOIT tested Mustangs netminder Kelly Campbell with 10 shots throughout the frame. Despite the offensive chances, the score would remain 1-0 in favour of the Mustangs heading into the third.

The Mustangs would be called for a penalty in the opening minutes of the third period when Marlowe Pecora was cited for tripping. UOIT forward Zoe Battie would score for her team to tie the game at 1-1.

The game would remain tied for a stretch of the third until Mustangs Stacey Scott received a pass from Kendra Deller and was able to put the puck in the back of the net to put the Mustangs up by one at 14:08.

And only 47 seconds later, Sydney Kidd scored to give the Mustangs the one goal cushion.

Despite a final push to get back into the game, the Ridgebacks failed to beat Campbell—who stopped 32 shots—again and the Mustangs would take the game by a score of 3-1.

The Mustangs will be on the road again tomorrow when they take on the York Lions at 2:00 p.m.
