Mustangs off to strong start with two wins in lacrosse opening weekend

GUELPH, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team opened up their 2013-2014 season with back-to-back wins in Guelph on Sunday, September 15.  The Mustangs defeated McGill 21-3 and the University of Toronto 14-11 giving the Mustangs a 2-0 record, and extending the team's winning streak to 32 games, after the weekend's season-opening doubleheader.

The Mustangs were strong from start to finish against McGill with a well-rounded offence as 12 different players put points on the board.  Sheehan Mulholland led the team in assists in her first game as a Mustang.

Western head coach Dave Hastings was pleased with his team's performance saying "we got off to a great start for all the players and moved the ball well."

The Mustangs hit the field again after the win against Guelph, facing off against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Western dominated the first 15 minutes of the game, putting two Mustangs goals on the scoreboard and the team maintained a 7-3 lead until the Varsity Blues scored two goals just before the half.  The Mustangs built a 10-5 lead in the second half before trading goals with Toronto to end the match with a final score of 14-11 for the Purple and White. Tawnie Johnson scored five goals in the victory and was named Western's Athlete of the Week for her performance on Sunday.

Hastings was content with the outcome but sees areas for improvement. "It was the kind of game we needed after a big win," said Hastings. "The players did a great job of making the proper adjustment to keep the game in hand. Still, we have some kinks to work out as the season progresses."

The Mustangs travel to Hamilton on Saturday, September 21 to play McMaster and Queen's as OUA lacrosse action continues.
