Box Score NORTH BAY, Ont. – The Mustangs came out with a bang to start off 2014 as they put up three early first period goals en route to a 5-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon in Memorial Gardens.
It took the women's team just over two minutes to get on the board as
Brittany Clapham opened the scoring with her third goal of the season. Assisting on the goal was forward
Carly Rolph who would add two more helpers on the day. Those three points are good enough to move her into a tie for the lead in team scoring with
Stacey Scott who netted the Mustangs second period goal.
The Mustangs third tally in the first period by
Ally Galloway was enough to chase Nipissing's netminder Sabrina Picard from the net. Replacing her between the pipes was the Laker's regular starting goalie Jacqueline Rochefor, but the shakeup in net could not stop the purple and white as the Mustangs went on to score another goal in each of the following two periods.
While the offensive effort was unstoppable with five different goal scorers, the team played a strong defensive game as well. Mustangs goalie
Olivia Ross stopped all 14 shots she faced to earn the shutout on the road. Despite taking several penalties in the game the Mustangs remained perfect on the penalty kill, blanking the Laker's on all five of their power play opportunities while also outshooting Nipissing by a margin of 25-14. The shutout for Ross is her first of the season as she gets credit for her third win on the score sheet.
Another standout performance came from defencemen
Brianna Iazzolino who helped bolster the Mustangs offensive attack with a power play goal and an assist against the Lakers.
With the win, Western improves to 6-3 on the road this season as they head into another away game against the Laurentian Voyageurs tomorrow afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
