Last-minute goal leads Mustangs to shootout win over Laurentian

Box Score SUDBURY, Ont. – The Mustangs rallied late, as Cassidy Gosling scored to tie the game with the goalie pulled and only 16 seconds left on the clock before going on to complete the comeback victory with a 5-4 shootout win on the road against the Laurentian Voyageurs Sunday afternoon in Countryside Arena.

The win marks the Mustangs third straight regular season victory and maintains the team's hold on fifth place in the OUA with a 10-6-1 record. Laurentian now moves to 6-10-1 on the year, good for ninth in the league.

Gosling's third period marker, her third goal of the season, came off of an assist from her sister Katelyn Gosling giving her four on the year.

The Voyageurs jumped out to the early lead in the first period thanks to a goal from Lauren Langille before forward Samantha Morell scored near the end of the period to put the home side up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

Western fired back in the second, as Brianna Iazzolino scored a power play goal just over three minutes into the frame before Ally Galloway hit the back of the net at 19:17 to send the game into the third period tied at 2-2.

Morell opened up the scoring for Laurientian in the third, scoring her second of the day and tenth of the season to put the Voyageurs up 3-2 and give her the lead amongst all rookie goal scorers. The two sides traded goals throughout the remainder of the period with Tara Cation and Cassidy Gosling scoring for the purple and white while Julie Hebert scored for Laurientian.

After neither team was able to solve the other in overtime the game came down to the shootout. The Mustangs scored on all three shootout attempts as Galloway, Katelyn Gosling, and Michelle Saunders found the back of the net while Hebert was the only Voyageurs player able to beat Western goaltender Olivia Ross.

Ross split time in the Mustangs net, stopping nine of 11 shots, with Kelly Campbell stopping 10 of the 12 shots she faced. Laurentian's Laura Deller had a strong game at the other end of the ice, stopping 38 of 42 shots in the loss.

After taking two wins in two road contests the purple and white will try and repeat the same success in enemy territory again next weekend, beginning with a contest against the York Lions on Friday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m.
