Mustangs head into weekend action against RMC and Queen’s

The Mustangs men's volleyball team sits in a tie for second in the OUA standings with a 9-3 regular season record after their 3-0 win over the Windsor Lancers last week. This week they prepare to host RMC on Friday and Queen's on Saturday at Alumni Hall and the team will be looking to start a win streak heading into the matchups. It will be the Mustangs' second time facing both teams this year after they defeated Queen's 3-1 and RMC in straight sets in away-game action in mid-November.

The Mustangs are led by fourth-year outside hitter Garret May, who currently sits in third on the OUA scoring leaderboard with 4.34 points per set and a 27% kill percentage. May recorded 16 kills and three blocks in last week's victory over the Lancers, while third-year outside hitter Justin Scapinello added 11 kills and three blocks in the win. Also putting up big numbers offensively for the Mustangs this season is fifth-year middle Phil James averaging 3.60 points per set with an impressive 50% kill percentage.

The Western squad now boasts 18 points on the season and sits six points behind McMaster, who lead the league with an undefeated 12-0 record and 24 points. The Mustangs will be looking for two more wins and another four points this weekend to secure their place in the standings and separate themselves from their current four-way tie for second with Waterloo, Ryerson and York.

The RMC Paladins have yet to find a win this season as they sit in last in the OUA standings with a 0-12 record. The Paladins will enter this weekend's matchup coming off a 3-0 loss to the Guelph Gryphons last week.

The team is led by second-year middle Adam Lupton, who recorded seven points in the match against Guelph and is averaging 2.56 points per set on the season. Thomas McMullen adds an average of 3.15 points per set, also in the middle position.

Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. on Friday night at Alumni Hall.

The Queen's Gaels are 5-7 on the season and sit in sixth in the OUA with 10 points. The Gaels enter the matchup on a high note after their straight-set win over Guelph last week, and will be looking for redemption against the Mustangs after managing to take a set of the purple and white in their last meeting but being unable to come away with the win.

The team was led by third-year right-side hitter Aaron Nusbaum in the win over Guelph with 13.5 points in the game, but 6'7" outside hitter Mike Tomlinson is the team's scoring leader with an average of 3.93 points per set.

Saturday's match is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
