Box Score THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's basketball team extended their win streak to three games after their nail-biting 73-72 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday evening. With the win the team improves their regular season record to 5-8, posting wins in five of their last seven contests.
Peter Scholtes led the Mustangs with a team-high of 19 points on the night, but three other Western players recorded numbers in the double digits with
Quinn Henderson,
Greg Morrow, and
Eric McDonald scoring 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively. Scholtes 19 points edges him closer to eclipsing 1,000 points in his CIS career. The London native now only needs eight points to reach the milestone and join the rare group of players to score 1,000 points during their time in a CIS uniform.
In the first half the Thunderwolves were able to take the advantage early in the game, scoring 61% from the field and winning the first two quarters to lead 42-35 at the end of the half, but the Mustangs were able to keep the game close enough to turn it around after the break.
The second half saw a total of 10 lead changes with Lakehead holding its largest lead in the fourth quarter by 12 points. The last five minutes of the game proved to be the most crucial for the Mustangs as the purple and white managed to cut the lead to just one point with 42 seconds left. After a steal by Henderson, rookie guard
Rashayne Case sunk the game-winner with 12 seconds left to end the contest by a score of 73-72 for the Mustangs.
The Western squad will look to keep their momentum alive as they once again face Lakehead in the final game of their doubleheader on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
