Spectacular special teams help Mustangs sink York for fourth straight win

Box Score TORONTO – The Western Mustangs women's hockey team shut out four power play attempts, while scoring both a short handed and power play goal of their own, to pick up a 6-1 win over the York Lions on Friday evening at the Canlan Ice Sports Complex.

The win over last place York (4-12-2) extends the Mustangs regular season winning streak to four games as they improve to 11-6-1, including an 8-3 record while on the road. Western now sits in fifth place in the OUA, only three points behind the third place Guelph Gryphons.

After trading goals in a high tempo first period that saw York outshoot Western 17-11, the Mustangs headed to the power play at the five-minute mark of the second period.  Just 44 seconds into their first of only two power play opportunities on the day, forward Stacey Scott netted the eventual game winner.  The goal is Scott's third of the win streak and is her team-leading seventh of the season.

Despite heading to the penalty box only minutes later, the purple and white continued to surge as senior defender Sydney Kidd came away with the puck and beat goaltender Megan Lee short handed to put Western up 3-1 midway through the second frame. Marlowe Pecora extended the Mustangs lead a little over five minutes later, notching her fifth goal of the season off of assists from Casey Rosen and Brianna Iazzolino.

Western added to their goal tally in the final 20 minutes as both Brittany Clapham and Megan Taylor found the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 6-1 victory.

Kidd led all Mustangs players with two goals and one assist in the contest. Three other Western players each had multiple points with Rosen, Iazzolino, and Carly Rolph all contributing two assists in the victory.

As impressive as the team's offensive outburst was, the team's defence efforts were also strong, stymieing four separate power play attempts, while netminder Olivia Ross was virtually unbeatable, turning aside 40 of 41 shots to capture her fifth win of the season.

Western now has a short turnaround before Saturday's 3:30 p.m. tilt against UOIT in their final regular season road contest. The Ridgebacks (9-8-1) enter Saturday's game in seventh place, only four points behind the Mustangs, and will be looking to improve their place in the standings with only a few weeks left in the regular season.
