Mustangs suffer 78-61 loss to McMaster

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs were on the road to take on McMaster on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mauraders 78-61 to push their record to 6-10 in the OUA regular season.

Western had three players in double digits with George Johnson, Eric Mcdonald, and Greg Morrow scoring 11, 16 and 14 points, respectively. McMaster countered with three double-digit performances of their own, as Joseph Rocca, Taylor Black, and Nathan McCarthy all passed ten points in the match.

In the first half, McMaster's defense was able to control the game while their offence was able to create opportunities on the floor early. Those opportunities led to a 17-5 run in the second quarter for the Marauders—a run which proved to be detrimental for Western as they struggled to get shots to fall, shooting only 23% from the field.

One look at the stats shows the Marauders also did a fantastic job of keeping Western's scorers at bay in the first half, as veterans Morrow and Peter Scholtes were contained to only two points each. At the end of the half, the outlook wasn't great for Western with the score standing at 43-21 for McMaster.

But in the second half, Western was finally able to pick up the momentum, losing the third quarter 20-21 but winning the fourth 20-14. With Morrow and McDonald scoring 12 and 13 points in the half, Western was able to cut the Marauders lead, but the Mustangs pushback effort ultimately came up short as the game ended at 78-61 for McMaster.

Next up for the Mustangs is a gome game against the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, January 29 at Alumni Hall. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. and fans from across the world can watch all of the action live on Mustangs TV.
