Box Score TORONTO, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's volleyball team closed out their weekend doubleheader in Toronto by registering their fifth consecutive victory, defeating the Varsity Blues in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-21.
The University of Toronto team—currently ranked ninth in the OUA with a 26.7% winning average—were set for a challenge on Sunday, taking on a Western team that currently sits third overall.Â
The Varsity Blues managed to keep the first set close but the Mustangs would prevail, controlling the court on their way to taking the set 25-20. While the Mustangs recorded a match-low 22.2% kill percentage in the set, they did get some help from Toronto, who registered a match-high six technical errors to open the day.
Western took the second set as well, going up 2-0 after winning 25-16, although the Varsity Blues made them earn it, only registering one technical error in the set. Â The Mustangs responded with an impressive kill percentage of 41.7%, by far their highest of the match, while making only two technical errors, their lowest of the day.
During the third and final set the Varsity Blues stepped up their offensive game—registering 12 kills to Western's 11—but couldn't stop the Mustangs from finishing the sweep, as Western finished them off by a score of 25-21.Â
A number of Mustangs players had impressive performances on Sunday as
Garrett May tallied 13 kills and two service aces for the team's offence while
Matt Silver and
Phil James put up six digs and five digs, respectively, for Western's defence.Â
On the Varsity Blues' side, Jake Dysselhoff and Michael Denton both turned in solid performances, with Dysselhof registering eight kills on offense and Denton finishing up with seven digs on the afternoon.
With five straight wins under their belt, Western will return to Alumni Hall next weekend looking to continue their hot streak, hosting York on Saturday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m. and Nipissing on Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m.
