Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. –
Kyle De Coste continued his red hot scoring streak, scoring two of Western's three goals in the third period less than a minute apart, as the Mustangs rode a late charge to a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field Arena on Friday night.
Â
Western's victory—their season-high sixth in a row— gives the Mustangs a two-point lead atop the OUA West standings and continued veteran starter
Josh Unice's recent hot-streak, marking his eight victory in as many starts. The fifth-year netminder bounced back from a first period goal to shut out the Warriors until the final two minutes of the third, turning aside 22 of 24 shots on the night to give his team a fighting chance.
Â
De Coste's two goals, scored at 2:23 and 3:11 of the third, extended his point streak to four games and put him on a point-per-game pace for the first time this season. During those four consecutive games the second-year forward has compiled seven goals and two assists, raising his season totals to seven assists and a team-leading 15 goals.
Â
De Coste joins four other Mustangs who are currently on a point-per-game pace, as
Daniel Erlich (9G—30A—39P),
Zach Harnden (14G—21A—35P),
Matt Clarke(12G—22A—34P), and
Steve Reese (9G—13A—22P) all have 22 or more points on the year.
Â
Reese and Harnden also entered Friday's game on point-streaks and both of them managed to keep those streaks going, with Reese registering one assist on De Coste's first and Harnden assisting on both of his goals. Harnden—a well-renowned sniper in the OUA—sits right behind De Coste with 14 goals on the year but has also proven how well rounded of a player he really is this season, adding 21 assists on the year.
Â
Stefan Salituro, who scored the eventual game-winner just over 12 minutes into the final frame with assists from
Matt Marantz and
Adam Stoykewych, is the next-closest Mustangs player to a point-per-game pace this year. The transfer-student from the University of New Brunswick has 14 points in 21 games, thanks in large part to a hot-streak in December.
Â
The Mustangs will travel back to London where they will welcome the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night. On Thursday night the Gryphons snapped a four game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over Waterloo and they will no doubt be looking to avenge a 4-0 loss at the hands of Western on January 23.
Â
Notes
Â
All of the goals on Friday came at even-strength, as the Mustangs went 0-for-1 and the Warriors went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Western has been hot on the power play lately, going 11-31 since the New Year, although they have been even hotter on the penalty kill. With their perfect record on Friday they have now killed 34 of 35 power plays since the New Year, giving them an amazing kill percentage of 97%.
Â
Daniel Erlich and
Matt Clarke both had their point-streaks snapped on Friday, with Erlich ending his seven-game streak and Clarke a two-game streak. Erlich was passed by Ryerson's Dominic Alberga on the OUA's scoring leaderboard on Friday but still sits in third with 39 points. He'll be looking to get back on the board at home against the Gryphons Saturday.
Â
Josh Unice may not lead the OUA in wins but the fact that he's even close says enough. Parker Van Buskirk of Windsor, who leads the league with 14, has played in four more games than Unice while only compiling one more win. The next closest goaltender is Marc-Antoine Gelinas of UQTR with 11 wins.
Â
De Coste's 15 goals place him seventh in the OUA in a tie with three other players. Ryerson and Waterloo are currently sweeping the top four in goal-scoring at the moment, with Jamie Wise and Dominic Alberga of Ryerson sitting one-two with 20 and 18, respectively, and Chris Chappell and Justin Larson of Waterloo sitting three-four at 17 apiece.Â
